Tired of staying at home watching summer reruns on television? Then don't miss the next Way Out West Tent meeting on August 5th, featuring some great films, rare clips, and a documentary never before seen in this country. It will take place at the Mayflower Club, located at 11110 Victory Boulevard in North Hollywood. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:15 p.m.
Our special presentation will be a brand new documentary, produced as part of a series of BBC documentaries on classic film personalities. Our own Grand Sheik, Bob Satterfield, is featured in the program, which documents the lives of Laurel and Hardy and includes some rare footage, including a brief television appearance that was not previously known to exist. We guarantee our members have never seen it before, and may not have another chance to see it again.
Also on the film program will be Towed in a Hole (1932), featuring Stan and Ollie as fresh fish salesmen who decide to fix up an old fishing boat, so they can go into business for themselves. Then the Boys will slip away from the wives for some laughs at a nightclub in the always popular Blotto (1930). As an added bonus, we will show several scenes that were cut from the final print of Blotto. We will also present an encore screening of the Music Box Stairs documentary (2002), which was produced especially for last year's banquet. If you didn't attend that banquet, then you've never seen this short documentary either.
We'll have the air conditioning cranked up, the Fabulous Fisher Franks cooking in the kitchen, and the drinks on ice at the Mayflower Bar. It's an evening of summer fun, complete with no commercial interruptions. We guarantee you won't find that at home on T.V. See you at the Mayflower Club on August 5th!

A new, 2 disc set of Laurel and Hardy DVDs will be released on August 19th, featuring restored versions of Sons of the Desert, The Music Box, Another Fine Mess, Busy Bodies, and County Hospital. These promise to be first-rate quality, as they come from the same prints released on DVDs in Europe to rave reviews. If you own a DVD player, we urge you to buy this new set of discs. If this first volume does not sell well then future volumes are highly unlikely.
Also of interest is a new 5 disc set of DVDs released on July 22nd. The collection features Utopia, Flying Deuces, The Lucky Dog, Be Big, March of the Wooden Soldiers (originally released as Babes in Toyland), the This is Your Life television program, and a special entitled Laurel & Hardy at the Movies.
The next International Sons of the Desert Convention is less than a year away, so now is the time to start thinking about attending. It will take place in Columbus, Ohio, July 15-18, 2004. The Perfect Day Tent in Columbus will be the host.
Scheduled activities include tours of three old time movie palaces (including a screening of Sons of the Desert at one of them), a trip to the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, the traditional pee-wee contest (on the Ohio State Capitol's lawn), two evening banquets, film room, sales room, trivia contest, parade, and questions & autographs with invited celebrity guests.
Plus, there will be four pre-convention trips scheduled with trips to the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame & Football Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Museum in Dayton, Paramount's King's Island amusement park near Cincinnati, and Cedar Point amusement park between Cincinnati and Toledo. Registration forms will be available soon. Click here to visit the convention website.
Also on the horizon is the 7th European Sons of the Desert Convention, which will take place September 2005, near Hamburg, Germany. It will be hosted by the County Hospital Tent of Itzehoe, Germany.
We celebrated the end of school and the beginning of summer at our meeting in June, which featured a Laurel and Hardy "final exam" trivia contest. The winners received diplomas and were honored on stage with a graduation ceremony. In the audience was a full house of Laurel and Hardy fans, who watched On the Wrong Trek, Them Thar Hills and A Chump at Oxford. To honor Stan Laurel's 113th birthday, a pair of cakes were served during the break. There was also a raffle.
